The CFL Controversy: Pros And Cons

A NATION OF CONVERTS?

Millions of us have switched to CFL fluorescent lamps in our lamps, overhead fixtures, sconces and exterior lighting. And, for the most part, we've seen a slightly lower rate on our electricity bills because the 60 watt CFL bulbs we put in our table lamps attract only 14 watts of electricity. The dramatic reduction in power consumption for typical American households is not the real culprit that demands more electricity is our old and outdated refrigerator, water heater and dryer. These appliances, as well as heat pumps and air conditioners, are responsible for very high utility bills.

The savings we do not see is that, as millions of us have moved from fixed bulbs to CFLs, we have made significant reductions in our impact on the grid and, as a nation, reduced demand for our electricity utilities.

Introduced to the market in 1980, the CFL has improved - low cost, instantly lit, glittering and good white light. But so far only 5% of light bulb purchases are CFL, the rest are incandescents. CFL remains a small market product and specialized as a "green" source, their credibility is still low.

CFL has freed us from our high demand for electricity, but there is still much we can do to reduce our high energy consumption. Switching to alternative energy sources such as solar and wind will significantly reduce our electricity consumption. Our energy efficiency is increasing and we are replacing older appliances and HVAC systems with energy star rated products, which are less dependent on our grid.

Everyone agrees that this is for better use, less use, less dependency, less utility demand and lower energy costs for consumers.

ADVANTAGES OF CFL

American custom homes have between fifty electrical sockets and an average of twenty to forty lighting sources including lamps, sconces, ceiling fixtures, outdoor and security lamps, and night lamps or additional lamps. If 110 million American households replaced one incandescent bulb with CFL (compact fluorescent lamp), the energy saved would be enough to power the city of 1.5 million people or all homes in Delaware and Rhode Island. In terms of oil not burned, or greenhouse gases never run out of atmosphere, one bulb is equivalent to taking 1.3 million cars off the road.

Power plants are the only major source of greenhouse gas in the United States and half of our electricity comes from coal-fired plants. Replacing one incandescent with one CFL in 110 million households is enough electricity to save two power plants - or skip the next two buildings.

Those of us who are visually challenged and in need of better reading light than the lamps they use can find great visual support in replacing the incandescent with CFL cold spectrum emitting white light that replicates sunlight and makes the book pages super white and text it is very black, producing a high contrast in reading material that will help the visually impaired in reading,

CFL DRAWBACKS?

Many of us who are affected by migraines claim that light from CFL bulbs can trigger migraines. Often, fluorescents in general, including commercial and residential tubes cause these migraine reactions as well. There are several studies done on sine waves that produce electromagnetic frequencies. Clean electricity produces a smooth sine wave. Dirty electricity produces spikes in the sine wave and research has shown that these spikes make blood sugar sufferers rise. Devices that measure the amount of dirty electricity indicate that other household items that create dirty electricity are computers, printers, monitors. We may be living in a filthy snowstorm today and, it is reported, that the CFL contributes to the storm's energy storm.

CFL light bulbs emit Ultraviolet rays, like sunlight. For that matter, so is the halogen bulb, which is controlled by a glass seal to prevent exposure to UV rays. Excluding glass spreaders that filter UV emission, CFL can cause problems for those with UV-sensitive photos, especially for people exposed to skin diseases such as Lupus, CFL that can make their skin worse. CFL with glass cover (cover) on the swirling bulb tested negative for any UV radiation, but this information is not on any CFL package, so far.

New research areas are being developed in relation to electro-magnetic sensitivities, namely monitoring and documenting people with skin rash, migraines, fatigue and fatigue due to the high frequency of contaminants from various devices in our residential and commercial environments, including CFL.

Not sure if CFL in your home causes headaches, migraines, fatigue, arthritis? It has been advised by a physician to replace the bulb and see if there are any differences. However, if households have regular clusters of computers, monitors, flat-screen TVs, etc., it may be difficult for the disease to become a single source such as CFL bulbs.

CFL ADVERSARIES

News that incandescent bulbs will disappear from store shelves and we will all be asked to use CFL does not work well with many of us. Many do not like to be told that they can no longer use incandescent bulbs. The complaint often was, "It seems the government is trying to control everything, including what we use to light our house!" And while the dramatic savings in CFL may not be reflected in electricity bills, it seems that Americans are withdrawing from incandescents from the market as just another power that can manipulate consumers.

There are also dislikes for CFL due to the particular disadvantages of using it. One is mercury content and in fact, all bulbs and fluorescent tubes contain a small amount of mercury (5 mg or less) which is a neuro toxin. CFL contains less than 5 mg of mercury. If they break, they pose a risk of harmful substances inhaling toxic mercury powders that symbolize their rotating tubes. There is no HAZMAT (hazardous material) guide for incandescent, but there is for CFL. They must be disposed of like batteries, motor oil, etc. CFL Broken can be disposed of responsibly at your local Depot store. But how many know?

If the disposal is not carried out responsibly, the landfill can be contaminated with mercury, a toxic substance that can affect water sources and water sources. This formation has been proven in our oceans as large fish are monitored and elevated levels of mercury are recorded in their bodies.

Lastly, CFLs cannot be used in silence and although there are volatile CFLs in the market, they are more expensive than other CFLs and there are criticisms that some are absorbed "in steps" and do not fade or brighten like incandescent.

CFL CONFUSION

So, people who replace the standard 60 watt incandescent with the 60 watt CFL may find that the CFL is dim and yellow and therefore lower. If they were replaced with different spectrum CFLs, they would find that the CFL in the same wattage was actually brighter and whiter than the incandescent. CFLs do not behave like incandescent in the sense that there are (depending on the brand) offering three different spectrum (color temperature and lighting) that significantly affect the brightness and color of the same three watt lamps.

There were complaints about what the CFL looked like and not everyone liked seeing the light bulb. CFLs that look like standard incandescent are available. Glass cover in the same standard bulb only covers CFL swirly.

CHANDELIER CONUNDRUM

Finally, so far, the CFL has not been able to resemble or replace light, light, fire-resistant and lightweight candles. Although CFLs are housed in small bulbs (candelabra) based on their elongated form, they are only small bulbs in glass envelopes that visually replicate the light bulbs. And, they are not clear, so glossy filaments like gemstones that are the standard feature for standard candle light bulbs cannot be duplicated by CFL. For many who want to replace the type of bulb in their chandelier, this is a drawback. If there is a solution to this problem, it will be solved by LEDs, which can easily duplicate both the basic, the fire shape and the clear glass cover.

For all the controversy the CFL created, millions were sold and used today and helped us reduce our reliance on our utilities (they typically last for seven years.)

LEDs from the FUTURE

The real light at the end of the grid dependency tunnel, however, will be greatly favored by LEDs. They are expensive now, just like the CFL a decade ago and they still need to be more user friendly. What are their benefits to the CFL? They can be clear (where CFL cannot come in clear bulbs), they can be easily dimmed (using standard dimmer), they have less temperature than CFL, they use less watches (60 watts using LED watt compared to 14 watt CFL usage,) and LED bulb life is 35,000 hours compared to 10,000 CFL.

As new products evolve to ease our dependence on our utility resources, there is no doubt, there are still some who lament the ancient extinction of high technology, high temperature, prolonged and extremely inefficient.
