Most women are ashamed of being called 'too sensitive.' But when the subject is siblings, they are also willing to wear a cardboard S. According to the American Academy of Dermatologists, at least 40% of women believe they have sensitive skin, though most dermatologists report that only fractions are actually made. Sensitivity "defined as skin exposed to product irritation, weather, or stress" is a real (though misunderstood) condition. It's not the same as allergies. This means you have a lower tolerance for irritating substances, such as fragrances and dyes. The bad thing here is that the more the skin reacts, the more sensitive it becomes. Imagine a normal skin that has a natural barrier like Recommendation Pack. People with sensitive skin have obstacles that are disrupted all the time. But by identifying what is troubling the barrier and protecting it with the right moisturizer, you can develop thicker skin.
Read Labels: Before using creams, lotions, or makeup, read the ingredients list. The less ingredients you label, the better. All products and formulas should be free of fragrances, dyes, and isopropyl alcohols (commonly known as rubbing alcohols). And beware of herbs and botanical oils. Test each new product on your neck for a few days before applying it to your face.
Cleaning: Clean the face with a non-foaming liquid cleaner, or a soap-free bar. Do not use a towel or any harsh scrubs, which can be too harsh for sensitive skin. Rinse face thoroughly with warm water and pat it with a soft towel, leaving skin slightly damp. No need to use toner, which usually contains drying and isopropyl alcohol.
Moisturize: Dab moisturizer on damp skin in the morning and evening. Find one that contains ceramide, fatty acids, or cholesterol, all of which help to form an anti-inflammatory barrier. In the morning, when moisture is absorbed, use sunscreen (with SPF 15 or higher). It should also contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which is most unlikely to cause a reaction.
Cheat Sheet
Select the appropriate product. 'Allergy test' meaning it has no ingredients that cause a normal reaction. 'Noncomedogenic' meaning it doesn't clog the pores.
Read labels. Not everyone with sensitive skin has the same problem, but the most common stimulants, in the form, include fragrance, isopropyl alcohol, coloring, PABA, lanolin, sorbic acid, formaldehyde, and benzoic acid.
Don't assume that natural products are safe. Some botanicals (rosemary, sandalwood, arnica) and essential oils (jojoba, tea tree, lavender) can be irritating.
Sample neck test for a few days. If they don't bother you, they might be good for your face.
Don't try new product warehouses at once. Similarly, if the skin is cut off, stop using everything, and re-introduce the product one by one.
Be gentle. Use a cream cleanser, liquid or bar without soap and rinse with warm water. Avoid Buf-Pufs and washcloths. Pat with a towel and leave the skin slightly moist.
Moisturizing with products for sensitive skin, or containing fatty acids, cholesterol, and ceramides.
Every day, be sure to use a PABA-free sunscreen that contains titanium dioxide or zinc oxide.
Daily Basics
Wash with liquid, not foaming liquid.
Use a soap-free formula with oatmeal that soothes dry and itchy skin.
For days, use a fragrance-free moisturizer that contains a non-irritating sunscreen. At night, it is smooth on noncomedogenic formulas that help strengthen the skin while you sleep.
Dermatologists say that sensitive skin patients are more likely to avoid using sunscreen, linking it to past reactions to PABA. Choose one that will not aggravate the skin.
It's not just what you put on your face. Hair spray can cause acne along the hairline. Use allergy tested and keep hair out of the way whenever possible.
Extra help
To alleviate redness, dermatologists recommend using fragrance treatment. A dice size of 1% hydrocortisone cream on the counter also relieves itching.
For dryness of the body, increase environmental resistance with lipid-containing products, which are safe for sensitive types.
To treat blemishes, start with a non-irritating face lotion that minimizes depletion of vitamin A. Follow up with a concealer that will not aggravate acne, which does double duty by helping to clean and conceal flaws.
Dermatologists like products that are rich in iron oxide, which are less likely to cause reactions. They are also free, which means they won't rob the skin of the moisture it needs.
Trade Tricks
Do not shower or shower for more than 20 minutes, or you will dry out your skin. Use warm water.
Do not start any aggressive treatment during the winter, when the skin is dryer and more sensitive due to low humidity and internal heating. Humidifier helps the skin dry.
Grainy or chemical exfoliants can cause acne. Excessive daily scrubbing rubs the sebaceous gland, which can clog pores. Use a clay mask or mud to remove dead cells.
Treatment is a problem unless they are simple, steam-free, and use fragrance-free products.
Avoid chemical skin and laser treatments if you are sensitive to exfoliants and skin brightening creams.
If acne medications irritate your skin, ask your doctor about taking oral antibiotics or birth control pills, which can help reduce the defects.
Take Retin-A treatment once a week. Dilute the strength by mixing it with your moisturizer.
For skin that seems to be provoked by anything and everything, ask a dermatologist about cleansers and moisturizers that are usually prescribed for posturgery and postpeel patients.
