Ongoing Research Is Providing Several Choices For Vitiligo Treatment

Today's Choice for Vitiligo Treatment

There are around sixty-five million people worldwide who must live with vitiligo, an incurable pigmentation disorder that affects the skin. Cells that give the skin a break, and white patches appear at random locations. The problem can also affect the mucous membranes of the nose and mouth, and the inner lining of the eye is impermeable. Hair in the affected area becomes snow white. Vitiligo treatment is intended to slow the progression of the disease.

The underlying cause of the disease remains unclear. Some believe it is genetically exposed, while others consider it to be autoimmune. Disruption of the immune system like this allows our bodies to turn on the table, attacking our own organs from suppressing external threats. The triggers are also unknown, although there are reports that problems sometimes start with sun exposure, but have not been scientifically proven.

The disease is not honor or sex or race, because they all suffer the same. It is actually more noticeable in people with darker skin. Although not fatal, it is emotionally and emotionally devastating. It causes embarrassment and depression, and is socially unacceptable in some parts of the world, even a reason for divorce. Depression often causes emotional pain to young people, who experience severe rejection and social rejection.

To date there are no true cure, but only treatment. Topical steroid creams may be effective in bringing back some common pigmentation cells. When used, the results you see don't usually appear for three months. Side effects such as skin shrinkage or curvature may appear. There is a corticosteroid in the cream, similar to the content of the hormone cortison, and special consideration must be given when using it in children under the age of ten.

Another method is called psoralen photochemotherapy, or PUVA therapy more often. Used in conjunction with ultraviolet light, psoralen reacts with the light to darken the skin. The medicine is either taken orally or applied directly to the skin, followed by exposure to special lamps. The session must be very careful, as there is a very real danger of injury such as severe sunburn.

Oral oral coral is also effective, but has the disadvantage of encouraging visual cataracts to develop. After this treatment, doctors usually advise patients to wear special UVA sunglasses for up to 24 hours. Adverse effects can include abnormal hair growth, hyperpigmentation, itching, nausea and vomiting. The less stringent therapeutic method of using a drug called monobenzone actually removes the pigment from the skin surrounding the white patch, making the overall appearance more uniform. Treatment with this drug can cause ultra-sensitive to sunlight.

Surgeons will sometimes perform autologous skin grafts, generally extract the pigmented skin from one area and transplant it to the non-pigmented patch. The results are not guaranteed, and the procedure can be expensive, with patients advised of possible common complications that accompany any surgical procedure. Additional experimental methods using specially applied skin blisters can also be effective, but can leave scars, and the amount of re-pigmentation is unlikely.

Medical supervised tattoos work for some people, and there is research into newly developed skin cells in the lab, which may be transplanted back to the donor. Perhaps the most common solution is cosmetic vitiligo treatment. Some companies have designed personalized products that will mask depigmentation with a special makeup, allowing consumers to feel more comfortable in social situations. Many patients also advise joining a support group or seeking appropriate counseling, as the sympathetic human element is crucial in coping with this lifetime of suffering.
