Dying Your Hair Punky Colours During Pregnancy - Is It Safe?

The idea of not dying your hair during pregnancy has been around for some time; However, this is usually related to natural hair color, rainbow hair. So I'm trying to try some things on this topic.

Because people say you can't dye your hair during pregnancy in the first place, it comes from two issues. The first is the theory that coloring chemicals can affect the development of newborns. The second is that the hormones in your body during pregnancy can cause your hair to become resistant to dye, and you may have trouble achieving the desired results. So let's look at these two issues ...

The theory that chemical dyes can affect the development of newborns ...

I believe that this theory came in the '80s when hair dye, which contained more harsh chemicals (such as 4-MMPD) was found to penetrate the skin and cause cancer in laboratory animals. But today manufacturers have stopped using these chemicals, with some brands even producing free ammonia hair dyes such as various L & Oreals INOA.

When it comes to hair coloring and bleaching products there is not much research in this area. The limited research available is based on animal studies and shows that it is safe to dye your hair during pregnancy. As a hairdresser I know many of my clients choose their hair color during pregnancy, and I have yet to find anyone who has a problem.

Dr Miriam Stoppard (parenting expert) says 'Very powerful pigments in dark hair dye penetrate the scalp within minutes and can be detected in white blood cells within a few hours.' She goes on to say "... this means the body deals with pigment efficiently. White cells clean it and remove it from doing anything." But most doctors recommend waiting to dye your hair until the second trimester, when the baby is growing. less exposed.

However, doctors recommend that you avoid chemical smoke during pregnancy, and for this reason it is not recommended.

So what about the rainbow rainbow hair coloring?

The bright and fun alternative colors (like Manic Panic, Special Effects, Raw, 'N Rage ... etc) have no peroxide, no ammonia and no smoke. This type of dye is synthetic, so it only stains the hair dye in the same way as the dye staining material. This means not using harsh chemicals to penetrate the hair like standard hair dye. Even some rainbow hair colors have some of the same ingredients as those in the conditioner. Although there is no research in this area, I think you may be safer by using a kind of punky temporary color than standard permanent hair dye, as it is better for hair and skin. But if you're still unsure I suggest you talk to your doctor.

Now even though you can apply these alternate colors directly through your hair color now, you will find that it gives your hair just a bit of a touch. This is because the dye is designed to work on the hair first.

So, if you are after the vibrant colors, you need to first brush her hair. Many pregnant women will apply bleach to their scalp without any problems, but if you are still worried there are many ways to break your hair without any contact with the skin. (Any chemical absorbed into your system will come through your skin / scalp, not through your hair.) So instead of doing a complete bleaching of the head I recommend that you try one of the following techniques as & # 39; head

  • Foil (also known as 'curved' or 'highlighting'): Where a small strand of hair is placed in foil with bleach.

  • Balayage (also known as 'freestyle painting'): Where the bleach is painted on a random strip of hair.

  • Shaving (also known as 'freeze'): Where the bleach is combed at the ends of short hair.

  • Dip Dying: Where only the ends of the long hair are left to appear 'dyed'. in color.

I suggest you go to the salon for this, but if you want to break your hair at home I suggest you ask a friend to help you mix and wear bleach. Ammonia in bleach can emit some smoke if you inhale while mixing bleach powder with peroxide. Therefore, work in a good ventilation space to help minimize smoke.

The theory that hormones in your body during pregnancy can cause your hair to be resistant to hair dye ...

Some women have reported that hair dyes do not take their hair off during pregnancy, and the hair color changes as expected. This may be due to hormonal changes in your body, but this is a minority of cases. Most women have no problem getting their desired hair color. However, hormones have other effects on the hair during pregnancy, and even after childbirth. Some women will find their hair fuller, stronger and more shiny during pregnancy, as the body retains more protein. But after giving birth and especially during breastfeeding, some women find that their hair is fragile and weak, some with hair loss. Hormones can do crazy things to your hair during pregnancy. Dry hair may be oily, oily hair may be dry, curly hair may be straight or vice versa.

Also during pregnancy your immune response changes so you may be more prone to allergic reactions to hair dye, even if you have never had one before. So if you plan on coloring I recommend you do a skin test first, as most hair coloring products recommend.

At the end of the day ...

To the best of my knowledge and experience as a hairdresser, I would say it is safe to dye hair during pregnancy. However, there is no clear evidence of this and at the end of the day you and your baby decide. I would always recommend that you discuss this with your spouse / doctor and your doctor before you make up your own mind.

I believe it's important for women to feel good about themselves during pregnancy, be it a natural hair color, or a Mohawk rainbow. But whether dyeing your hair will make you feel good or causing you to worry for nothing for nine months is something to think about.
