This title is presented by the Editor as a challenge, so how can an artist resist it? My first reaction was to wonder why anyone would bother, when finer and more compatible neutrals could have been achieved otherwise. I can imagine how it could be done but I didn't try it in reality. So, still in my night clothes, I jumped into the studio early this morning and experimented. See what you think of my results, below.
And for readers who take the first step in their journey towards becoming an artist, I will add some definitions as we go along.
- So, what is Neutral Hue?
Color neutral: Neutral can be categorized as Gray or Brown. In experienced hands, they are some of the most delicate blends of color used throughout the painting. However, they can be made by mixing all three Primaria. Here's how:
1) Make Grays
The easiest way to achieve Gray from the mixing of the three Primaries is this: Mix the Blue and Red equal parts, resulting in the raw Purple. Into the mix add small sections of Yellow until a dark gray appears. To ease Chroma * you can - be very careful - add a small amount of white.
*What is Chroma?
This value refers to darkness or light of color.
2) Make Browns
Mix the same blue and yellow parts, producing a raw Green. Into the mix add a small portion of Red until you reach the appropriate Brown. For example, you might want Brown for less intensity or Chroma for your current painting.
It may seem obvious to add White to your new Brown mix. But this would be a big mistake. Instead, add more yellow.
- How to Avoid Creating Shopping
All this mixing should be done on your palette, using a palette knife. This is the only way to achieve a 'clean' color mix, important when you use Gray or Brown. In the fun of creating new paintings, it's easy to reach for a brush and start adding color directly to your canvas. Despite what you see in Hollywood movies about famous artists, you can't get all the pigment from the wool by wiping your brush with a cloth or rubbing it in turps. The rest of the color will end up in a new mix and make it muddy.
TIP. I urge you to get into the habit of using your brush to put on paint, never mixing it.
- Another way to make Neutrals
You can make Neutral much smoother than the colors you use in your current paintings. For example, if you draw a landscape with a cloudy top, you might use Cobalt Blue mixed with White in the background. If you want to create Gray to define the cloud, you can do this:
- Take some of your Cobalt Blue, mix it with Complement * - Burned Sienna - and you'll get a subtle gray tone that you can vary by mixing in some White.
* What is Complement?
This is the color opposite to Dominant * Hue in the Color Wheel. For example, the complement - or opposite - of Blue-Purple is Yellow Green.
* What is Hue dominant?
You've been guessing this one, haven't you? It is the color or Hue that is used most in the painting you are working on. So, if your painting is a portrait and you need to enhance the subject's dark but neutral Brown hair color, try this:
- Mix Red, like Burned Sienna - which you have used for the skin tone in your portrait painting - with Ultramarine Blue to create a deep but neutral Brown.
When you want to create Neutrals, either from the Primaries or in some other way, experimenting is the only way to find the right mix of your personal style and selected item. Bonuses are the fun you'll do. (C) Dorothy Gauvin
