Dr. Thienna Ho was born in Saigon, Vietnam, in April 1968, just three months after the Viet Cong forces invaded the city during the infamous Tet Attack. Eleven years later, his family escaped the Vietnamese communists in a 50-foot wooden boat carrying 285 passengers. During their voyage to Indonesia, the ship was attacked five times by pirates. Less than a year later, Dr.'s family Thienna emigrated to the United States and settled in San Francisco. He then obtained several academic degrees, including a BA in Economics, a BS in Microbiology, a Degree in Genetic Engineering, an MA in Business Administration, and a Ph.D. in Nutrition Science. He has also done important additional studies in chemistry, biology, and molecular biology.
Dr. Thienna is the founder of THIENNA, INC. He is the World Leader Board on Human Skin Color. After seven years of independent scientific research, Thienna solved one of the most enduring mysteries on earth that has fascinated scientists for centuries — the causes of human skin color change! She is here to talk about the work and her new book "Uncovering the Mystery of Skin Color."
Tyler: Welcome, Thienna. I must admit I was very curious to talk to you because you claimed in your book that people have the ability to change or control their skin color. To start, would you please tell us how you first discovered this possibility?
Thienna: Thank you for having me here today. It's a treat. Tyler, this is a very emotional question for me to answer because my mom passed away last year and I want you and everyone to know how much I love her no matter what I say. I have to admit I was a little embarrassed to say this, but I envy my mom and my siblings for being born with beautiful bright skin, and I was the only child born with dark skin in the family. Since I was about four years old, I have known that neighbors and friends have always praised them for their beautiful skin but not mine. I learned at a young age from my family that my dark skin looked "dirty and impure" - because my skin tone was so flat that I counted at least seven different colors and skin on my elbows, knees, feet, and ankles shameful crocodiles such as, coarse, thick and dark gray. I actually hate my skin. Every time, I see my mom, I want to have beautiful beautiful skin.
During my adult years in the U.S., I tried every sunscreen product to lighten and even exfoliate my entire skin, but this product just darkened my complexion! When I was studying microbiology at San Francisco State University as a graduate student and genetic engineering as a graduate student, I was disappointed to discover that scientific research had not reached a level that would help me change my skin color. I am so disappointed that I made it my mission to learn all I could about human skin science so that I could solve my own skin problems and eventually help others with the same problem I did and this is how I solved the mysteries of human skin color.
Many people doubt that I was born dark. I have to say that I had to deal with problems to solve the problem and eagerly see the world as I see it. People say, "Vietnamese is not dark" and if I'm dark it's because I have to hang out in the sun! And when I move here, the weather is cooler so I'll naturally be lighter or go back to my natural colors. Well, this doesn't apply to my case. See the pictures in my book and on my website http://thienna.com/thiennaphotos.html when I was 12 years old and the pictures I took with my sister when she was 18 years old. Not much difference in the color of my skin after six years living in the U.S. and I did not expose myself to the sun. Even though I am 30 years old, my skin color is the same as avoiding the sun.
In my book, I will prove to you that genetic inheritance, solar radiation, and the extent to which you live at the equator have no significant effect on the development of skin color as we previously believed. You will learn that not everyone from the equator is black jet and not everyone from Polar Region is white at all. Therefore, living under a less sunny environment will not guarantee the development of light skin. You can cover your body with everything you want and avoid the sun; you're still dark unless you know my method!
Tyler: And what's the secret, Thienna? How does one change their skin color?
Thienna: One of the most important factors in determining skin color and one that is often overlooked is the amount of sulfur in your skin. When skin of any color has less sulfur for its use, it produces a darker shade. When skin of any color has abundant supply of sulfur for its use, it develops a lighter shade. Therefore, by changing the amount of sulfur in the layers that make up your skin, you can change the color of your skin!
What I have to say here is that we need sulfur to survive. Sulfur is a natural mineral that is fundamental to life such as water and salt. It is the eighth most abundant chemical element in all life forms and the third most abundant mineral in your body. You can't live without it. Sulfur is found in every cell in your body. Your body needs sulfur to produce skin, hair, nails, muscles, bones, and teeth. Without sulfur, your body cannot control its blood sugar or send messages from one nerve cell to another. Your body also needs sulfur to digest, absorb fat, and release cholesterol. Therefore, factors in your lifestyle and diet affect the amount of sulfur your body uses.
In my book, I teach people how to enrich their diet with sulfur-rich foods and how to adopt a pattern of behavior that will maintain a high level of sulfur in the body to lighten one's skin or maintain a flawless complexion.
Tyler: Thienna, I admit I've never heard of sulfur being talked about when we talk about minerals and vitamins and our body makeup. Why haven't we heard more about sulfur in the past? What are some examples of foods rich in sulfur?
Thienna: Sulfur is not widely studied in human nutrition. It is simply required by your body to neutralize and eliminate toxins to keep you HEALTHY! Your life depends, I believe, significantly on how you fight toxins before damaging your tissues that could potentially lead to chronic illness or cancer and what not. It is one of the most neglected essential nutrients for our body. Why haven't we heard it? Haha ... That's a great question. An example of sulfur rich foods is cabbage.
Tyler: You say that distance someone from the equator does not make a difference in their skin color. Is the diet of certain people, such as Europeans, more sulfurous than those in Africa? Is geography in what way responsible for skin color?
Thienna: European diets and lifestyles play a significant role in the development of their skin color but more importantly they are a secret in the book. There are gaps that help them save more sulfur for the body.
Geography is not at all responsible for the color of the skin. Take, for example, 2 groups of people: one lives at 4,500 feet above sea level and another at 8,000 feet above sea level where every 1,000 feet, there is a 6% increase in the intensity of UV rays. You would think that a group of people living at 8,500 feet would have darker skin but this is not the case. In fact, the group at 8,500 feet has white skin and the group at 4,500 feet above sea level has brown skin. I refer to the cases in my book — Hotan and Hunzakuts. This is not an isolated incident. There is no shortage of variation in human skin color no matter where you look. In conclusion, as long as sulfur intake exceeds toxin intake, the development of light skin is favorable and vice versa.
Tyler: Thienna, how radical is the color change possible? Can South Africa be made like someone from Finland or vice versa?
Thienna: From my own research and feedback from people who have practiced my Natural Fairskin Method for the past 2 years, people are getting more colors, like myself. For example, they can go from brown to light brown, dark olive to light olive and light olive to light range within 12 to 18 months. For me, I've been practicing my method for 7 years; I can go from dark olive to light range. To this day, I can't say that my Natural Rule can make South Africa look like someone from Finland or vice versa because people are still testing methods and only time will tell.
Tyler: How does this prove to be possible?
Thienna: There is a lot of interesting scientific evidence in my book, which shows that the color of the skin is irregular and the process of skin lightening can be a very recent phenomenon (most recently meaning several thousand years). For example, recent genetic research has shown that modern German ancestors do not have light skin. The visual evidence left by an artist 10,000 years ago from caves in France shows a man in dark brown hunting a young deer. Other interesting facts can be found in the latest research on short-lived creatures! Believe it or not, research shows that even one nutrient can affect the development of fur or animal coat colors! You have to wait and read my Natural Evidence from my book. It'll knock your socks off!
I also have evidence here and people who have used my method can testify to this as well. And whether you have used my method or not, you may not be directing the development of your own skin color to a certain extent! Some people are lighter with age and some are darker with age.
Tyler: You claim to brighten your own skin. Are you going to tell us a little about this change and how many changes have you made?
Thienna: People used to think I was Cambodian but now they think I'm Japanese. It must be a real change! I'm sorry if I offended anyone with a label. I have to say skin color is one of the hardest and most exciting subjects to talk about and I'm always in the line of fire. I hope people will understand where I came from, why I did it, and not judge me before they read my book. I am happy to have been born in this perfect state that has led me to solve one of the most puzzling scientific mysteries in the world.
Tyler: What is the most common reason why people use this color change?
Thienna: For aesthetic reasons and I'll leave it at that. It's like someone likes tan.
Tyler: Thienna, with no intention of offending anyone, can I ask if people have responded to your work as having a racial agenda?
Thienna: Of course! They think my work is bad. As bad as evolutionary theory is! As you know, science has no moral judgment. If we run out of logic, we can't solve anything.
Tyler: That's a perfect reaction, Thienna. Of course, we have heard of white men dressed as black men to see if they are treated differently. In your own experience, do people treat you differently than usual because of your lighter skin? May I ask why you think your family is having trouble with your skin color?
Thienna: Tyler, this is a really interesting question. To be honest, in my own experience, I've never had any problems with how people treat me when I have dark skin. People really love me and I can feel their love and kindness. However, it's weird to say, but many women dislike me when I'm lighter. I'm sure there's nothing new about whether I'm dark or bright, there's been a war among women since eon that I won't go into. For colored men, I would not comment on this because I can only listen, learn, and provide solutions that will help us all.
Again, I love my mother more than the oceans, the sky, and the stars and I will go to the ends of the earth for her in life and in death. When he left me, he took my heart and my soul. My mom is everything but she's not flawless. As for my dark skin tone, I really believe it was accidental and not directed at me at all. But if you grew up hearing how dark skin is, in the end, you know you're dirty too. That's what I want to share now. Maybe someday I'll tell you my story. I must say I am proud of myself. With the struggle comes the reward. I won't change anything and I have no regrets. Although I hold a grudge for eternity. Anyway, this is a spice of life. I live, learn and see life in all its beauty and its ugliness. This is what makes life more interesting and beautiful.
Tyler: What are some methods that can be used for older people, worrying about age-related signs such as heart spots?
Thienna: They can practice my Natural Fairskin Method and their natural spots will ease. Natural Fairskin Method I use only diet and lifestyle without using chemicals, drugs, or toxic steroids to eliminate any skin problems. Someone might say ... well, I don't want to be lighter than I am. I want to emphasize that you need sulfur to keep your skin clean and vibrant. To have therapeutic skin therapeutic effects, you need a lot and I mean more sulfur in your diet. In short, if you have a large amount of sulfur in the body after the body uses sulfur for all the biological processes it needs, then sulfur can then be applied to your skin. Skin lighting is a side effect of high sulfur intake. This is why you can control the development of your own skin color depending on how much sulfur you give your body and how much you store for your skin to use. If you don't want your skin to be light, don't eat too much sulfur! But eat enough to keep your skin pretty and clear into your old age!
Tyler: What about people with serious skin damage due to sun exposure over the last few years. Is there hope for them?
Thienna: Damaged skin, whether from toxic chemicals, toxins produced by the body or sun damaged skin, is very difficult to repair. However, people can use my method to undo the damage to their skin to the fullest extent and restore their youthful wrinkles. Using toxic chemicals to repair damaged skin can make things worse in many cases. Chemical peels and other methods like microdermabrasion can help repair damaged skin to a few degrees but people still need to change from the inside out so that the underlying problems will never appear again.
Remember, what you put in your body, your body, or what affects your body from your environment will affect the mechanisms that control your skin's health and color. It doesn't matter where the source comes from; In the end, toxins are toxins and the body will use sulfur to purify toxins from the body, leaving less sulfur for the skin which in turn affects your skin's health.
Tyler: Owning a ton and using a tanning salon has been a huge trend in the United States in recent years, but we have always warned of skin cancer. Is there another way to naturally grow skin?
Thienna: Yes. There is a chapter in my book on how to use a diet to tan your skin naturally. There is no need to expose your skin to harmful UV rays! Indigenous people in the world are always darker than their modern counterparts in the developed world. You need to read this book to see what they are doing to achieve their blacks and maintain their dark skin for thousands of years even if they live in an inadequate sun environment!
Tyler: In reference to indigenous peoples, do you find in your research that ancient cultures have knowledge that you already know — that some ancient cultures may have worked on the secrets of skin color?
Thienna: Ancient cultures must have the wisdom and knowledge of how to keep their skin light but they don't know why scientifically. For example, to make the skin lighter, ancient Egyptian women bathed themselves in milk. Tibetans will avoid eating butter, South Indians will avoid drinking black tea, for Chinese people, do not eat too much soy when you do not want the skin of the same color, etc ...
In this book, I show you the science behind "how." Any questions you want to know before are all in this book. Although the answer is not written in this book, it will speak for itself easily.
I must show that sulfur has been used since ancient times to treat skin diseases. What I found really interesting to me was how sulfur was described in Ancient Christianity. Christianity is conceptualized as the fuel that produces hell fire and in the New Testament, hell is called a lake of burning sulfur. Sulfur was known in ancient times as an ingredient that cleansed and purified sin.
Tyler: Thienna, you also mentioned that the poorest countries tend to have dark skinned people. Why this?
Thienna: The mechanism of your body's toxins cleaning is highly dependent on sulfur ... Anything that you put into your body, at the molecular level, will affect your sulfur status. Changes in the color of your skin are the result of changes in the environment, diet, behavior, lifestyle, culture, traditions, cooking methods and emotional and psychological factors such as stress.
I find that, all else being equal, a population group exposed to relatively low levels of toxins over the long term will have a lighter skin color than comparable groups exposed to high levels of toxins over the same period. Toxin robs the body of sulfur, which leaves little sulfur for the skin.
This is why skin color is not uniform in any population group. This is hard for me to say but rich and high-status people often have lighter skin than less wealthy people even though they share the same genetic makeup. Urban people are also lighter than their ethnic counterparts. This is not just my observation but skin scientists are also watching for this phenomenon. (I have to warn people about our discussions. This may be really annoying.
Tyler: You promised, Thienna, to answer some interesting questions, including why some African-American celebrities look lighter over time. I have to ask, what do you think has happened to Michael Jackson's skin color?
Thienna: Some African-American celebrities are losing weight over time as money and status take on the stress of their body, mind, and soul. They eat and live well and do what they like. Poorly prepared toxins bombard their bodies. Therefore, these factors naturally promote the development of lighter skin color. When we have no money, it does not come with the emotional and psychological stress of everyday life but we eat cheap and unhealthy foods that are laden with toxins. (If you hear the latest news ... food and merchandise from a cheap grocery store is packed with poison! -I won't name-and who's the buyer?) Our skin is naturally darker with time and if we continue this pattern from one generations later, the skin of the population only grew darker and darker until it reached equilibrium. Let me explain something very important here. Most of us are taught the fact that the sun is one of the major contributing factors affecting how your ancestors and you develop your skin color and that ... the closer you live to the darker equator of your skin and the closer you live to the North Pole lighter than your skin. It's not like that! Skin color is not uniform worldwide no matter where you look. You can completely remove the sun and you are still growing to have dark skin. The above mentioned factors (diet, lifestyle, behavior, culture, and tradition) can have a greater or greater effect on the development of skin color than sunlight and are not yet genetic!
About Michael, I don't know him but I will say this ... Michael will naturally get lighter by many, many colors over time with money and power. That's all I can say about Michael.
Tyler: I must admit that when I first heard about your book, I was skeptical about it. Will you tell us a little about the kind of research you put into the book to make us more confident?
Thienna: The findings presented in "Uncovering the Mystery of Skin Color" are the result of my extensive research in the fields of molecular biology, chemistry, genetics and nutrition as well as my own personal observations and experiences. I use rigorous scientific methods to solve my skin problems and my research is supported by over 500 well-known scientific sources. The advantage of applying a scientific method is that it should not be. My results can be produced by anyone who wants to determine if my decision is right or wrong in human or animal models. Since 2005, many people around the world have used my method and they have come to the same conclusion as I did. I'm very confident in saying that I did. I solved the mystery of skin color!
Tyler: Thienna, who has been your biggest influence?
Thienna: I have to say that my dad had the biggest impact on me. Because I was born with dark skin, my dad always pushed me harder than my other siblings to sharpen my mind. She provided all the vehicles for me to excel since I learned to walk — from music, to sports, to dance, to my education. He made me believe in myself — an insurmountable value that helped me excel in my work and life.
Tyler: Thank you, Thienna, for joining me today and sharing these great techniques for changing skin color. Before we go, will you tell us what additional information about the "Uncover Mystery Skin" reader on your site?
Thienna: On my website (www.thienna.com), people can find additional information about my company, what I do and of course questions and answers about books from readers. I also provide nutritional supplements to help individuals get healthier, clearer, and brighter skin ... that is, if people cannot follow my Natural Mysticin Diet strictly, they can supplement their diet with sulfur in my diet.
Tyler: Thank you, Thienna, for the interesting information. I look forward to many successes in your ongoing research.
