According to the US Poison Control Center, "One child is poisoned every 30 seconds and more than 50% of all poisoning occurs at home with children under 5." But of course, you keep your cleaning supplies out of reach, and only use baby products on your toddlers, and keep your family safe, right? But what really is in all those products, and what about the chemical residues left on your carpet, in your child's bedding, in the air that your family breathes daily?
Because young children are smaller than adults, they are exposed to more pollutants per kilogram of weight. Their tiny bodies and immune systems have not fully developed, and they are at greater risk of the accumulated effects of chemicals everywhere, from air fresheners to laundry detergents.
I've listed below some of the most common ingredients and why you don't want them in your home anymore. Note how many seemingly benign products, such as deodorants and bath gels, contain these harmful substances. And remember, even though they may be small, you put them on your skin, your hair, your clothes and your air every day, year after year.
AMMONIA
Ammonia is fatal if swallowed. 80% of all ammonia produced is used as fertilizer. It is also used in the manufacture of synthetic fibers, plastics, and explosives, and is added to many cleaning products, detergents, window cleaners, stain removers, bleach, dyes, and floor waxes. Consuming even a small amount of liquid ammonia in your home cleaning may cause severe burns in your mouth and throat. If you get it in your eyes, it can cause blindness. Ammonia is a corrosive substance that can burn your skin, eyes, respiratory tract, mouth, and digestive tract.
AMMONIUM HYDROXIDE
Ammonium hydroxide is a colorless liquid chemical solution formed when ammonia dissolves in water. It can also release ammonia gas into the air.
It can be found in many industrial and cleaning products such as floor fresheners, brick cleaners, and cement. These substances can cause difficulty in breathing, cough, severe or burning pain in nose, eyes, ears, lips, or tongue, throat, stomach, or throat, loss of vision, severe stomach pain, vomiting, severe pH change (too much or too little acid in the blood, causing damage to all organs), holes in skin tissues, and other symptoms.
BENZENE
These carcinogenic chemicals can be absorbed through the skin, and irritate the mucous membranes. It is toxic when swallowed, and inhalation of fumes can be toxic. It is cited by EPA and OSHA as a threat to public health. These chemicals are found in oven cleaners, detergents, furniture polishes, washers, and nail removal.
Benzene-related diseases include Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML), Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia, Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS), Myelofibrosis and Myeloid Metaplasia, Aplastic Anemia, Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL), Multiple Lungemia, Myeloma, Thrombocytopenic Purpura, Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML), Cancer hematology.
CHLORINE
The most widely used chemical is a suspected carcinogen and is certainly a strong irritant, and it is responsible for many poisonings each year. The Clean Air Act 1990 lists it as a dangerous air pollutant ... but you inhale it every time you use it in laundry or bath products and tile cleaners. And airborne waste remains in toilet paper, paper towels and paper towels.
Household bleach, which is used to whiten or remove mold from the surface, is a 5% solution of a stable form of chlorine. It is a powerful scraper that will irritate or burn the skin, eyes and respiratory tract. It can cause pulmonary edema or vomiting and coma if swallowed. Never mix bleach with toilet bowl or ammonia cleaner. Smoke can be DEADLY!
FORMALDEHYDE
Formaldehyde is very toxic and is a known carcinogen. It is used in the manufacture of glue, as well as preservatives in deodorizers, disinfectants, cosmetics, vaccines and is used for broadcasting bodies. Formaldehyde is used in shampoo, conditioner, bath gel, liquid hand soap, and bubble bath. Kids products like bubble baths and baby shampoo also have formaldehyde in it! Some health effects of exposure to formaldehyde include eye, nose, and throat irritation ... nausea and cough ... fatigue, skin rash, and severe allergic reactions. Formaldehyde is also used in sheets, mattresses, foam, plastics, and building materials.
GLYCOL ETHER
Glycol ether can cause skin, eyes, nose, and throat irritation. It can also harm the reproductive system. These chemicals can damage the kidneys, liver and central nervous system. It is quickly absorbed through the skin and is found in some home cleaning products, paints, cosmetics, and perfumes.
Also known as cellosolve butyl (2-butoxy-1-ethanol, ethylene glycol monobutyl ether, butoxyethanol, butyl oxitol).
HIDROKLORIC ASID
Hydrochloric acid is corrosive and irritates the skin. It can dissolve and destroy soft tissue when in direct contact. The eyes, nose, and throat are easily irritated by steam. Contact can cause burns, permanent scars, and even blindness. These chemicals are found in aluminum and stainless steel cleaners.
KEROSENE
Kerosene (mineral spirit) is the eye and skin irritant, and can damage the lung tissue. It's neurotoxic. Kerosene may contain benzene carcinogen. It is available in all-purpose cleaning, furniture polishing, and candles.
LYE
Sodium hydroxide (also known as silk, caustic soda, and lye soda) is the eye, skin and respiratory system. It can burn the eyes, skin and internal organs. Lye can cause lung damage, blindness and death if swallowed. They are available in household cleaners, oven cleaners, tub and tile cleaners, toilet bowl cleaners, and drainers.
MORPHOLINE
Morfoline is very toxic. It irritates the skin, eyes, and mucous membranes, and can cause liver and kidney damage. It reacts with nitrite to form carcinogenic nitrosamines. It can also exacerbate pulmonary / bronchial disease or cause difficulty breathing, burns the skin, causes blindness, causes abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. These chemicals are found in all-purpose cleaning, furniture polishing, and car candles.
NAPTHALENE
Napthalene is irritating to the eyes and skin, and can cause cataracts, corneal damage, and kidney damage. It is a suspected carcinogen. These chemicals are highly toxic to infants and infants, and can cause blood loss to the fetus. These chemicals are found in assistants, air purifiers, deodorizers, carpet cleaners, and toilet bowl cleaners.
ORGANIC SOLUTIONS
Organic solvents (carbon disulfide, n-hexane, methyl n-butyl ketone, toluene trichlorethylene, perchlorethylene) are neurotoxins and central nervous system depressants. They are known as carcinogens. These chemicals are available in versatile cleaners, degreasers, metal polishes, varnish and varnish removal, dry cleaning solutions, paints and coatings, and adhesives.
Drinking water contaminated with perchlorethylene has leukemia and the implications of birth defects. Long-term overexposure can affect the nervous system. These chemicals are found in washers, degreasers, and dry cleaning fluids.
PETROLEUM PRODUCTS
Petroleum products (benzene, xylene toluene, benzene, napthalene, and Stoddard solvents) are strong eyes, skin, and respiratory irritants, and are either known or suspected of carcinogens. Neurotoxic effects can cause organic brain damage.
You are exposed to them in many common products including heavy duty cleaners, stain cleaners, furniture polish, car wax, flea shampoo, home and garden pesticides, and flea handling, furniture, and laundry products. Don't assume this product is safe because they are not banned (anymore).
PHENOL
Phenol (ethylene alkyl phenoxy ethanol and nonyl phenoxy ethoxylate) is highly toxic and is a suspected carcinogen. It can cause swelling, acne, and nausea. If swallowed, it can lead to collapse of blood circulation, seizures, cold sweat, coma, and death. These chemicals are available in versatile cleaners, air fresheners, disinfectants, oil paint furniture and laundry detergents.
BISULFATE SODIUM
These corrosive chemicals damage the eyes and skin, and internal tissues if swallowed. It can cause asthma attacks. Available in toilet bowl cleaners and deodorizers
EDTA
Also known as ethylene-diamine-tetra-acetic or diammonium, these chemicals are found in clothing detergents and are skin irritants. It also irritates the mucous membranes, which leads to allergies, asthma, and skin rash. These chemicals are not biodegradable. It binds with heavy metals in our lakes and rivers, affecting our water supply.
Now that you're armed with some information, read the labels before you buy! Look for labels that say the product is phosphate-free (phosphate causes excessive growth in aquatic plants, which leads to fish and other aquatic life). Phosphates are found in laundry detergents, dishwasher detergents, and versatile cleaners. Look for products that say "no phosphate", "no solvent", "petroleum-free", and so on. Better yet, look for products that contain only plant-based ingredients.
