Manufacturers claim that collagen supplements can help you lose weight, build muscle, burn fat (in your sleep), improve joint function and improve the appearance of your skin. What do they base this claim on? Here are the facts.

Collagens are proteins found throughout the human body in tendons, joints, fibers and dermal skin layers. They are not "complete" proteins, because they do not provide all the essential amino acids, for example, eggs will.

When protein or egg supplements reach your digestive system, they are broken down into their amino acids, which the body uses to make hormones, cells, fibers or any other need. Essential organs will always have the first option for cellular repair or replacement.

The claim made by collagen supplement manufacturers is based on the idea that you may not have enough protein in your diet. And that can cause a lot of problems.

The claim is based on results from a clinical study in which researchers measure all different things, using human volunteers. If you care about getting the best value for your money, then collagen supplements are not the best option to improve the appearance of the skin or slow down the effects of the sun, pollution, air and just on your skin.

Antioxidants are much more effective for this purpose. All the damage you see on the surface begins at the molecular level, when free radical molecules become agitated and start attacking healthy cells. Antioxidant molecules neutralize free radicals, preventing damage. Some antioxidants can also repair damage.
