Have you ever tried to lighten your skin with excess invasive agents such as hydroquinone but become anxious by waiting? Have you ever wondered what your options for removing age spots and acne scars are if and when the Food and Drug Administration takes hydroquinone off the shelf? In this case, you may want to know about another skin whitening agent called mequinol (4-hydroxyanisole).
Although the FDA approved a combination of mequinol and tretinoin to treat solar radiation ("age spots" or "liver spots") in December 1999, it has taken nearly seven years for this drug to prove its effectiveness in treating ethnic skin.
Research conducted by dermatologist Zoe Draelos has established mequinol and tretinoin as effective treatments to alleviate age spots or sun spots in Asian, Latin / Hispanic, and African American ethnic groups.
This study involved 259 subjects and according to the report at Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, the majority of subjects experienced a clinical improvement in their skin renewal four weeks after starting mequinol treatment.
In addition to treating the age spots, Dr. Taylor Taylor of Columbia University, New York has told Skin and Allergy News that doctors should consider combination of mequinol and tretinoin to treat post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). Taylor explained that PIH occurs in areas of the skin that are inflamed by skin injury, cosmetic or surgical procedures or from acne lesions.
Mequinol safety test
While mequinol may soon replace hydroquinone as a trusted skin softener, the question remains, "How safe is mequinol for human use?" Mequinol is actually a derivative of hydroquinone, which makes one wonder about its possible toxicity.
However, members of the American Chemistry Council have dealt with my mequinol offenses for laboratory mice and rabbits. Animals do not die after exposure. Such an attempt makes mequinol look harmless. However, the FDA does not recommend the combination of mequinol and tretinoin for pregnant women. Furthermore, pregnant women should take effective birth control measures when using this pigment to correct treatment.
Side effects of mequinol include redness, stinging, burning, irritation, peeling and itching. Also, you should be careful when using mequinol if you do face waxing or use astringent to dry skin. And, you should not forget to use sunscreen when using any of the agents that lighten the skin.
In the United States, 2.0% and 0.01% skin whitening treatments are sold under the Solage trademark. Although mequinol may soon replace hydroquinone as a skin softener, you should still visit your doctor for a prescription to benefit from this drug.
