What Causes Skin Darkening?

Skin darkness occurs through the process of melanogenesis, usually due to sun exposure. Sometimes excessive melanin production results in hyperpigmentation in small spots or patches, commonly referred to as age spots. Look at the subject of responsible tanning and biological processes. Then let's take a look at How to Lighten and Lighten your Skin Color.

What is Melanin?

Melanins are pigments of different colors, but they are usually brown. It is responsible for the color of one's skin.

People with bright skin can make tan as a result of repeated sun exposure. Tanned-leather has been in and out of style throughout history. Surveys show that most men and women see tanned bodies as healthier than their pale bodies, which is a misinterpretation, as tanning can cause wrinkles and skin cancer.

Your Sun & Skin

UVB radiation from sunlight triggers melanogenesis, increasing pigment production by melanin-producing cells. It is the same process that causes sunburn.

Cellular DNA is damaged during sunset. The same type of damage triggers or promotes melanogenesis. DNA damage can lead to the formation of wrinkles or cancer cells.

UV light induces the formation of molecular lesions that cause fractions in DNA strands called dimers. If dimers are not repaired by the body, they can cause mutations. Dimer is the leading cause of melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer.

Although exposure to sunlight is the most common cause, skin darkness and excessive melanin production can occur as a result of excessive retinoid use. Retinoids are a form of vitamin A. Beta-carotene is one of the most well-known retinoids. It is found in carrots and other orange vegetables.

Eating too much vegetable or taking beta carotene supplements will cause hyperpigmentation. Skin usually has an orange appearance.

Excessive melanin production, hyperpigmentation and skin darkness may occur in response to exposure to Psoralens. They are sometimes used in instant tanning or spraying, advertised as a safe alternative to tanning. Psoralens are classified as photo-carcinogens; Compounds that can cause rupture and mutation of DNA strands when exposed to sunlight.

Apparel, Allergy Causes

Chronic irritation due to friction of the clothing can cause the affected area to darken. Allergic reactions or rash can cause hyperpigmentation, too.

One of the ingredients commonly used for whitening age spots can have the opposite effect. It can stimulate excessive melanin production and cause the appearance of dark lumps on the face or body. Hydroquinone is a potent ingredient. It is prohibited in some countries.

One of the parabens (artificial preservatives commonly used in cosmetics) is known to cause hyperpigmentation and has been banned by the European Union for that reason. Although paraben has not been listed as a carcinogen, anything that triggers melanogenesis and skin darkness can theoretically lead to skin cancer.

Alcohol and some other ingredients in cosmetics can cause the formation of age spots or hyper-pigmented areas. Genetics clearly play a role. Some people have a genetic tendency to spots. Others only have darker skin because of their heritage.

It can prevent excess melanin production and aggravate the skin. You will learn about this in my next article: How to Lighten and Lighten Your Skin Color.
