Vitamin E Oil

Vitamin E is described as a "light rod" of cells, enabling reactive molecules to attack cells without damaging them. This is especially true in skin cases, where vitamin E protects the skin against ultraviolet radiation. Vitamin E rich in food, when taken, can go directly to the skin cell membrane and protect the skin.

Vitamin E comes in the form of gels, capsules and oils. Oils and gels can be used topically to help protect the skin as well as scars. Vitamin E contains alpha-tocopherol, either 100% pure or mixed. Alpha-tocopherol in its natural form is powder and thick. Therefore, it mixes with carriers like olive oil. Vitamin E oil is processed from vegetable oils such as corn, soy and canola through vacuum distillation. It's heavy and sticky.

Vitamin E oil has a lifespan of about two to three years. When exposed to air, it reacts with oxygen and therefore becomes inactive, resulting in shelf life and potential depletion. Similarly, exposure to extreme heat also reduces life expectancy. Therefore, vitamin E oil should be stored under a well-protected condition.

Generally, vitamin E oil producers add ingredients such as glycerides, and therefore, vitamin E content may be within the range of 18-20%. The value of IU oil (International Unit, 100 IU is equal to 67 mg for natural vitamin E and 45 mg for synthetic) can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, depending on the type of tocopherol available and the percentage in oil. For example, oils processed from soybeans will be rich in gamma-tocopherol.

Vitamin E oil is synthetically produced in the form of esters ofcopherols, mostly acetate and succinates. Esters are more resistant to oxidation during storage than tocopherols that are not absorbed. It is mainly used in pharmaceutical formulations and food formulations to strengthen foods. They are wrapped in a soft gelatin capsule. The bio availability of these tocopherols is the same as that not yet absorbed and measured in IU.
