Types and Role of Collagen in a Human Body

There are twenty types of collagen present in living organisms. They are scientifically classified from Collagen I to Collagen XII. IX is found in the cartilage and during ossification, chronodrocit is produced by X. XI is seen in the bone, cartilage and intervertebral cartilage. Dental enamel, ligaments and tendons are places where XII is seen. Collagen is a protein that contributes to about seventy-five percent of the skin. It is important to repel fine lines and wrinkles. In the skin, collagen formation occurs in both the fibroblast and keratinocyte layers. They are allowed to move freely in the extracellular space.

Collagen I is responsible for the buildup of skin and basement membranes. Collagen offers elasticity and support to the skin.
