Lycopene, the red pigment that gives their tomato color, is the most learned and potent of all antioxidants. Recently, the Department of Dermatology at Mount Sinai Medical School is investigating the effect of lycopene applied to photodamage on skin exposed to ultraviolet radiation (UVB); radiation responsible for sunburn. The use of lycopene on the skin inhibits ornithine decarboxylase and myeloperoxidase. These two polyamines are important for stabilizing the DNA structure in the core of skin cells, repairing DNA strand-break repair pathways, and as antioxidants. Thus, ornithine decarboxylase is an important enzyme for cell growth, producing the polyamine needed to stabilize newly synthesized DNA. Regularly used lycopene also reduces bifold skin thickness.
The use of topical lycopene prevents caspase-3 cleavage. After caspase-3 cleavage acts as a cell killer in cell apoptosis, the normal process of cell death must occur for new cells to regenerate. UVB irradiation completely reduces PCNA (proliferating cell nucleus antigen), and untreated skin with lycopene maintains positively colored cells throughout the deep skin layer. Topical use of lycopene significantly reversed the inhibition of PCNA caused by UVB. PCNA is an important antigen for DNA synthesis and cell repair. In addition, normal staining for PCNA was restored in the treated lycopene skin. In addition, lycopene may act as a skin protective agent by reducing inflammatory skin reactions, maintaining normal cell proliferation, and possibly preventing DNA damage as shown by blocking the steps required for normal cell death following UVB injury.
The importance of this research continues to emphasize the importance of lycopene used in health care. Lycopene can help prevent skin aging from repeated exposure to environmental pollutants and free radicals as well as exposure to the harmful effects of sun UVA and UVB responsible for sunburn, age spots, skin aging and skin cancer. The importance of lycopene used in the topic of lycopene is taken as a supplement that rests on the fact that only topically used lycopene produces a high concentration in the skin for any benefit. Oral supplements spread to all tissues and organs and do not build enough levels in the skin for use.
Although many skin care products contain various antioxidants claimed to be resveratrol, acai, and pomegranate to name a few, only lycopene has been shown in actual medical studies to benefit and continue to be an antioxidant king.
