Prior to its use in tattoo removal, TCA (Trichloracetic acid) was commonly used to remove delicate lines, wrinkles and acne scars. Prior to that, over 50 years ago, it was used in various strengths to eliminate calluses, corns, stretch marks and spot age.
All TCA chemicals have been carefully tested and proven effective for tattoo removal or for the purpose of tattooing quite often to provide areas for closure. In a study published in the British Journal of Plastic Surgery in March 1988 Six hundred and seventy patients with tattoos were treated with TCA for a period of 6 years between 1979 and 1984 with a success rate of 85%. It has proven to be a simple and inexpensive tattoo removal technique.
TCA is a cosmetic, not cream, liquid that gradually fades and removes tattoos in the skin and does not contain hydroquinone - a controversial skin bleaching agent commonly found in many tattoo removal creams. TCA Acid is also commonly used by many skin care practitioners including dermatologists, doctors and health spas. More than hydroquinone counters are banned in Australia, in 21 European countries and some Asian countries for fear of cancer and other skin conditions. It is available in some other countries but only in low concentrations like 2% - 5%. Hydroquinone is often used to treat conditions such as hyper-pigmentation (or darkening of the skin), uneven skin tone or dark circles under the eyes.
TCA skin works from the surface of the epidermis (top layer) to the tattoo ink over time, through a series of skin tones. Chemical peels are considered less painful than laser sessions and are similar to the slightest sensation in most cases. Soda mixes and water mixes have been known to relieve this discomfort. Many users claim it hurts less than the original tattoo. Inflammation causes controlled burning which causes the ink to rise to the surface and slowly fade by repeated use.
Damaging tattoos with a TCA kit at home before undergoing laser treatment can save you money. This is because faded tattoos will require less laser sessions to remove and will result in less painful laser sessions because the installed ink will require less heat than the laser to destroy or break the ink. TCAs that fade with TCA acid will recover faster after a laser session since a damaged tattoo is easier to remove. Less residual ink on the skin equals less time under the laser and less pain. About a laser session saves more money in your pocket. Keep in mind that like other tattoo removal methods, TCA acid will take time. After the TCA is used, users usually need to allow between 3 and 6 weeks for approval before starting the next application.
Another advantage of this system is that it does not depend on color, which is not true for most laser systems. These acids will work well on all colors of ink.
Laser usually has an easier time with dark colors such as black and dark blue or dark red but has a harder time getting rid of light blue, light blue, blue, light green, white, green and certain yellow tones. These colors may require more laser sessions unless the ink is preloaded.
