We have become a society obsessed with our looks.
We have noticed that we spend more on beauty products in the West than we do on education.
Why are we so obsessed? Because it's easier and more affordable than ever. The aging skin care technology has grown exponentially. We know more about skin today than we ever did. There are sophisticated skin care products that can last years, and of course, plastic surgeons have perfected their trade for easier and cheaper procedures than ever before.
Are we justified in our obsession?
They say that beauty is only in the skin, and while I believe this is true, it's also important to do what feels right to you. If retaining the look gives you that day, by all means, that's what you need to do, but I must add that I'm not a fan of going down the knife. With the great progress made in skin care products today, I prefer to take the less invasive route.
Here are some age-related tips and remedies that will help improve the appearance of your skin at the age of needles and knives.
20 Something
Your skin is at its peak of beauty in your twenties, yet preserves its beauty and always uses at least SPF 30 sunscreen. Of course this should continue at any age.
Avoid oily makeup and masks. Use a free oil moisturizer daily. This is also a good time to start using eye creams under the eye area at night.
Try using products that contain green tea that have helped reduce the risk of skin cancer.
30 Something
You are 30 seconds away and your skin is starting to dry out and sun damage may begin to appear. It's time to start using a thick moisturizing cream to lock in high moisture content. Continue with eye cream at night and use your sunscreen religiously. Also, skin bleaching products may need to be used to reduce dark spots from sun damage.
Hint: Place your moisturizer on damp skin. This helps lock in more moisture.
40 Something
Time to kick another position. Your forty is when your skin loses its tension. It may start to look tedious and your pores may get bigger. Blotches, spots, age spots, color changes, and skin color changes may become more apparent. Retinoids, anti-oxidants and hydroxy alpha acids can improve the appearance of your skin and your 40 is a good time to start using it. Of course it is important that you continue to use a thicker moisturizer and eye serum daily.
Home microdermabrasion kits are also an option that can produce a smoother texture and skin tone while refreshing the texture and color of your skin.
50 Something
Changes in your skin have reached high gear. Menopause helps in the loss of estrogen that gives your skin elasticity and keeps it hydrated, but as estrogen levels decrease, you will begin to notice wrinkles around your eyes, relaxing the eyelids and expression lines around your mouth and forehead.
Start using anti-aging formulas or reducing wrinkles such as vitamin A (Retinol) or Glycolic acid products. Retin A has been shown to reduce fine lines and wrinkles while improving skin texture, tone and color, as well as your hydration level.
Glycolic acid triggers new collagen to radiate cells and reduce wrinkles on the skin's surface. Post menopausal women can also use progesterone-containing creams that enhance their elasticity and firmness.
60 Something
At age 60, all types of collagen are well below their normal levels. There is also a wonderful hydration cream that contains Alpha Hydroxy (Glycolic acid), soy, andretinol green tea (vitamin A) which your skin needs to dry now and show signs of age. Alpha hydroxy acid will help to reduce the skin and retinol will reduce your fine lines.
60 Plus
The texture of your skin will look smoother and you will probably start to notice age spots. You will appreciate the early care you give your skin as the signs of aging will be minimal, however, if you do not start early you will be able to clearly see the effects of neglect.
While it is never too late to take care of your skin the damage you have will be difficult to alleviate without specialized medical treatments such as Botox or surgical procedures. All of the above should be applied but it is wise to consult your doctor for further treatment.
If you are not yet 60, the best skin care advice is to follow a good skin care regimen at an early age. It's an easy habit to enter and best of all, you'll thank yourself later.
