Pregnant women need to pay close attention to the cleaning agents they use at home as infants growing in their womb are exposed to toxic household products. Certain chemicals may have adverse effects on fetal development, especially when the baby's organs are still in development stage.
Here are some cleaning products you should come up with if you are expecting a baby:
1. Bathroom cleaner. The cleaners used to clean and disinfect the toilet and bathroom floor contain corrosive materials that can irritate the skin, eyes, and lungs. Avoid cleansers with bleach, sodium hydroxide, or phosphoric acid. Pregnant women, especially those who may have asthma, should avoid these substances as they can cause respiratory problems. Instead, try natural scrubs like baking soda and vinegar.
2. Clean all purpose. Housewives, by and large, love to use products that can do a lot of work - and why not? For pregnant women, in particular, every little facility is welcome, and who wants to move around the cleaning box whenever trying to clean the house?
The bad news is, all these purifiers may contain agents such as triethanolamine and diethanolamine, which are used to make soapy beans. When these chemicals react with pollutants such as nitrite, they often lead to the formation of cancer-causing agents - certainly not something you want to be around when you have a baby still growing in your stomach.
3. Glass cleaner. Keeping those windows clean can be a challenge. Those abusers don't stay long, do they?
Glass cleaners can make the task of boring and repetitive cleaning less painful, but using it during pregnancy can affect your baby's health. Some glass cleaners have selosolve butyl, which is found to damage the nerves. The lungs and respiratory tract are also very dangerous, with the constant use of ammonia-based window cleaners, as they tend to release toxic gas.
Worse, glass cleaners also often contain glycol ethers that have been found to cause low birth weight in experiments with mice.
So what do you do if you're pregnant and still want to keep your glossy and glitter-free glass panels and mirrors? Try a mixture of water, vinegar, and liquid soap, initially. Liquid soap will remove wax film left behind by conventional cleansers on your glass surface. After using this mixture several times, you can skip the liquid soap; just vinegar and water then work well.
4. Disinfectant. It is well understood that pregnant women have a need for a clean environment. Goal-free home goals, however, are not always easy. Purifying agents with anti-bacterial properties contain hormone-disrupting disorders such as alkylphenol ethoxylates, which are found to interfere with embryonic development in fish and frogs.
Products with these chemicals also pose a threat to the environment as they pollute rivers and endanger wildlife. If you want to keep something germ-free, try products with tea tree oil or acapulco extract instead.
5. Air freshener. First, air fresheners can worsen the symptoms of morning sickness. Later, they often contain phthalates, which are associated with adverse effects on boys and cause asthma and allergy symptoms. Finally, spray propellants are usually made of propane and butane, which are highly flammable and increase the risk of fire.
