Aromatherapy Favorites: Patchouli Essential Oil

History and Uses of Patchouli

Ah, Patchouli Oil - people seem to like it or hate it. It is known that essential oils have a reputation for being a Hippy generation (according to one source, its use as a mask for highly valued plant odors), although it has been used for centuries, possibly thousands of years. Today, Patchouli oil has a good reputation in aromatherapy, with a deep, musky, and sweet scent, and a balance of Earth and Fire. It is an exotic scent that can leave a trail of smelling memories.

Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin) is a native herb from Southeast Asia, growing wild in Sumatra and Java at altitudes between 3,000 and 6,000 feet - though it is widely grown in lower tropical forests. It grows to a height of 3 feet, has strong stems and soft, hairy leaves. For the production of essential oils, the plant is cut two or three times a year, with the best quality oil obtained from the leaves harvested in the rainy season. The handles are picked up, bundled or packaged, and allowed to partially dry under shade and fermentation for several days before the oil is extracted via steam distillation (Patchouli oil is now available as a CO2 extract in limited quantities). The process of fermentation softens plant cell walls, reducing oil extraction.

The relative ease of cultivation, and high oil yields kept Patchouli's essential oils low. Keep in mind, Patchouli is one of the few essential oils that has improved with age (the others being Frankincense, Cedarwood, Sandalwood and Vetiver), and Patchouli oil is actually much older than fresh. Over time, the oil has dropped a lot of harshness, and adds a sweet note. As it ages, the oil changes from yellow to amber, with the aroma smoother and richer. The major oil components include: Patchoulol (25-35%), Alpha-Bulnesene (12-20%), Alpha-Guaiene + Seychellene (15-25%), and Alpha-Patchoulene (5-9%).

Perhaps for the first time since its power as a butterfly sucker, the scent of Patchouli has spread in fabrics and clothing exported from India in the 19th century. The scent becomes an indication of the 'Oriental' fabric. to the extent that English and French clothing manufacturers were required to produce their imitation products with Patchouli to ensure their acceptance in the domestic market. Beyond its use to prevent holes from being consumed in the spill, Patchouli oil has been used for centuries in traditional medicine in Malaysia, China and Japan. Particularly shown for skin conditions, Patchouli can be effective in cases of dermatitis, eczema, acne, dry skin, and other irritating conditions, along with dull and oily scalp. As a cell rejuvenation, it can help in wound healing and reduce the appearance of scars. It is considered an excellent remedy for insect bites and snakes, and has been used as a fumigant and scrub oil to prevent the spread of fever and strengthen the immune system.

Aromatherapy and Perfume Uses Patchouli Oil

The sapphire oil is considered an excellent and fixative note in perfume, being a component in many well-known perfumes. As a fixative, it slows down the evaporation of other oils more easily so that their aroma can be released over a longer period of time. A small amount of sapphire can be used in the natural perfume mix, adding that the aroma is deep and unpretentious. It mixes well with many essential oils, with almost all the common oils mentioned in various sources - including Vetiver, Rosemary, Sandalwood, Frankincense, Bergamot, Cedarwood, Myrrh, Jasmine, Rose, Citrus oil, Clary Sage, Lemongrass, Geranium and ginger.

In Aromatherapy, Patchouli is considered a great balance, relaxing yet stimulating, especially in the face of weak immunity where hard work and anxiety have left the individual in a vulnerable position. It is said to bring the three main forces working in the body - Creativity in the navel, Heart center, and transcendent wisdom of the crown - into harmony.

Sodium oil can also relieve stress from those who have excessive mental activity that may feel 'untouchable'. with their bodies and sensations. It has been considered a relaxing aphrodisiac, and can help people with impotence, cramps, and sexual anxiety that are products of mental anguish. Patchouli combines the effects of this aphrodisiac with antidepressants, enhancing the mind with a sweet, warm, spicy aroma.

As if this were not enough, Patchouli was regarded as the bearer of prosperity and abundance. Perhaps by allowing one to open up this possibility, the oil is used in rituals and prayers by those who need some kind of financial or other infusion in their life. One can just close their eyes, imagine the abundance they need, and breathe the aroma of oil for a few seconds.

For some simple mixes, try:

3 parts Patchouli and 1 part Rosemary Cineol. This is a wonderful blend that combines the depths of Patchouli with a refreshing Rosemary scent. This can certainly be used as a perfume, or used as a spreader.

When things get tedious, try it with 3 parts Coriander, 2 parts Patchouli and 1 part Bergamot. It can inspire and enliven a joy that can be found in life.

For those who are not sensitive, try 1 part Geranium, 1 part Patchouli and 1 part Bergamot. A beautiful and easy mix to be comfortable in your own skin.

It may take a little lesson, but many who claim to dislike Patchouli may actually enjoy it when they finally get a sample of a long-flowing or beautiful oil.
