Chameleons are lizards with many interesting features. There are several types of Chameleons. With the current classification, there are over 160 different species of Chameleons. Most of the Chameleons are from Africa and a small island off the coast of Africa called Madagascar. There are also some Chameleons of European origin, such as Spain and Portugal, and some Asian regions. They were also introduced to Hawaii. They tend to live in warmer climates from rainforests to deserts. Chameleons are truly unique creatures. Through evolution they have developed many interesting features.
One of these features is the ability to move their eyes freely. One eye can see next to or behind it while the other eye can see in front of them. This feature gives Chameleon the ability to have 360-degree views around it. Contrary to belief, the Chameleons did not change their colors to blend in with their background. They are naturally disguised because of their color. Usually green to match the top of the tree.
They do however change their color by brightening or darkening their skin, but this is based on temperature or emotion regulation such as stress or fear. Chameleons are arboreal, meaning they live in trees throughout their lives. They have strong legs like claws. Chameleons are didactyl. They have five legs on each foot, but they are joined together into groups of two and groups of three. This makes their feet look like chopsticks. Each toe has a sharp claw.
They also use their long tails to help with balance and climbing. Chameleons have a rather unusual tongue. Their tongues are made up of bones, muscles, and sinews. Most Chameleons can attach their tongues one and a half times their body. They use this feature for food. They can shoot their tongue in just a few seconds to catch their food. The tip of their tongue is also very sticky. Chameleons vary in size.
The smallest chameleon is about 1.3 inches and the largest at 27 inches. Many Chameleons show some headaches or facial expressions, such as nasal protrusions, or projections such as horns or large peaks over their heads. Like snakes, they have no middle or outer ear. This may indicate that the Chameleons may be deaf. Most chameleons are oviparous (egg laying) and others are ovoviviparous (live birth). After about 3 to 6 weeks, the oviparous chameleon will drop from the branch and dig a hole to lay the egg. Eggs will hatch between 4 and 12 months depending on the species. Ovoviviparous chameleons will produce between 5 and 6 months.
Chameleons mainly eat insects, such as grasshoppers, grasshoppers, crickets, cockroaches, and mantis. Some larger Chameleons have been known to eat small birds and other lizards. Chameleons do not seem to recognize standing water so they tend to drink water from the leaves. Chameleons are very beautiful creatures with many interesting features. Chameleons continue to be one of the most interesting lizards in the world.
