Top 3 Dangerous Skin Lightening Ingredients

The dangers of hydroquinone are very publicized but there are some other skin whitening ingredients that are just as harmful if not more so. When looking for an effective skin-brightening product, it is best to choose one that will give you good results but without the risk of damaging your health.

Hydroquinone

Hydroquinone is one of the most common skin lightening agents around it. Although it is banned in Europe and most of the world, it is available in many counter shades of skin products in the US where it is legal to buy it. In the US, it is possible to buy creams with up to 2% hydroquinone over the counter but up to 4% concentration is available with prescription.

There is no doubt that hydroquinone works to get rid of dark marks and lighten the skin but cannot be used for long periods of time. If you choose to use hydroquinone and do not see results after 4-6 months, you should stop using it.

Although, some studies show that hydroquinone is a carcinogen in humans that means it can cause cancer, there is not much research in this area.

Using hydroquinone for a long period of time can be synchronous, which is a condition in which dark and dark patches appear on the skin. The skin finally looks much worse than before the glowing skin treatment started.

Mercury

Mercury is another very effective skin lightening agent that causes more harm than good and has been used since the early 20th century. The use of mercury in cosmetics products was banned in Europe in 1976 and in 1990 in the United States.

Mercury is poison! It is absorbed into the skin and its effects can still be found in the body after death. Side effects of mercury poisoning include fatigue, memory loss, headache and kidney damage.

Although banned, it is still possible to find products that contain mercury that are illegally sold, so make sure you know exactly what ingredients in each cosmetic product you are considering buying.

Steroids (corticosteroids)

Topical corticosteroids such as hydrocortisone provide quick and temporary skin whitening but prolonged or unsafe use. Corticosteroids are usually recommended by doctors to treat skin conditions such as dermatitis and eczema and are not intended for long-term use. Skin light is a side effect of using this cream but this sale specifically to brighten the skin is illegal and when sold in the black market, steroids are usually not listed in the ingredients. The use of corticosteroids can lead to excessive hair growth, fragile and thin skin, irritation and fungal or bacterial infections.

There are many safe and natural ingredients used in skin whitening products today. Among these ingredients are arbutin, lactic acid, koic acid and licorice extract. When looking for a skin-brightening product, make sure it contains safe ingredients.
