Dr. William Mathias Scholl founded the Scholl Shoe Company in 1907. The son of German immigrants to the United States, Dr Scholl began working in a small shoe shop specializing in comfortable shoes in 1901. Customers with painful footprints instilled in him to learn more about anatomy and physiology of the foot. He dedicated his life to understanding the 52 complex bones and muscles, tendons, and ligaments that make up the human foot.
In 1904 Dr. Scholl graduated from Illinois Medical College as a medical doctor. In 1912 he founded the Illinois College of Chiropody and Orthopedics with a shoemaker, a pharmacist, a chemist, a chiropodist, and five other doctors. The college was later renamed the Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine, part of Rosalind Franklin University in North Chicago, Illinois. Today, it educates about a third of all U.S. podiatrists.
In his graduation year, 1904, Dr. Scholl designed and sold his first foot-care product, Foot-easer for arch support. By 1907, he had founded Scholl Manufacturing Co. Inc. The worldwide expansion of the company began in 1913 with the first Foot Comfort Service store opened in London.
Dr. Scholl has never stopped inventing devices to help clients with all kinds of foot and foot diseases. In the 1930s, the Scholl brand sold compression joints to help fight swollen ankles and varicose veins. Many cushioning devices are designed to improve the variety of footwear made by Dr. Scholl.
Scholl Exercise Sandal was first launched in 1959. International fashion hit, Scholl Exercise Sandal became the icon for the Scholl brand. During the celebrations of the 1960s and 1970s, models Twiggy and Jean Shrimpton were among them, wearing Scholls proudly.
