As a face training instructor, jawlin training is one of the most popular techniques I teach. It's a common problem that can be very old, but you can go a long way toward achieving a clear jawline by practicing face-to-face exercises specifically for jowls!
Slack skin and a loss of definition along a random line have never been a welcomed traveler, and with no new face, many believe they are trapped.
It can't be far from the truth! While it may look like a skin hangover, jowls are actually the result of a muscle-based structure that loses its tone and definition, and shrinks to gravity.
Stretch Muscles & Atrophy Like Our Age
As we grow older, if our muscles are not trained and strengthened, they will begin to stretch and atrophy. There is a reduction of the subcutaneous (fat) layer of skin and elastic connective tissue can become fragile through chemical damage such as smoking or sun exposure. All of these events can drastically affect our skin and result in not only sluggish appearance, but wrinkles and lines, all common signs of aging.
Weakening this basic facial structure is not taken into account when surgical procedures for 'lifting' face done. Simply stretching the skin tightly over the underlying structure is often a rare occurrence and can easily cause a mask-like, abnormal appearance. The constant practice of facial exercise, on the contrary, will produce a younger natural appearance that will only improve in the long run.
Facial Muscle Connected to Skin
Unlike the muscles in your body, which are attached to the bones, many of the muscles in the face and neck are usually attached to the skin, which allows us to attract facial expressions. This means that you can improve the appearance of your facial problems by working out and toning certain facial muscle groups.
Loss of tone and strength in both the neck (which supports the chin area) and cheek muscles along with gravitational pull contribute to the formation of jowls and lack of definition throughout the jaw. It is common practice to run and strengthen all different muscle groups as more than one group often works and supports specific areas of the face.
Jawline training
There are some quick and easy jaw exercises that can tone and enhance the appearance of jowls and jawlines.
I often practice the following jaw exercises at least twice a day because it's fast and easy!
- Stand or sit straight
- Spread the index finger and thumb one finger and place it on your collar bone, pressing it firmly. This will create significant muscle resistance to enhance the effect of any facial exercise.
- Using your other hand, press your thumb pad gently against your throat at the corner where it fills your chin.
- Keeping your mouth closed, gradually looking your head backwards while keeping your thumb pressure on your throat. Let your weight do the work, do not force this movement
- Hold for a count of 5
- Slowly bring your chin back and then down to your chest
- Turn head to start position. Repeat 10 times
