Laser Hair Removal Side Effects - Know the Facts

Laser hair removal has been proven to be a very safe procedure in thousands of patients. However, as with any medical procedure, be sure to discuss possible risks and side effects with your doctor so you know what to expect in the procedure. Choosing a qualified and experienced doctor is one of the most important things you can do to reduce your risk of complications. Fortunately, the side effects associated with laser hair removal are very temporary, and may not have long-term effects.
Side effects of laser hair removal that you may experience include:

1. Pain during treatment. During the procedure, you will experience little pain as the laser is being used. However, it shouldn't hurt. Especially if you have laser procedures performed in sensitive areas of your body, ask about numbing creams or pain relief options. Once the laser procedure is over, the pain will subside. You will be able to return to your normal activities once you leave the doctor's office.


2. Redness and swelling. This is common after laser hair removal. Usually for one or two days, you can apply ice to the area, as well as aloe cream. The redness and swelling should begin to subside as soon as the procedure is complete, and disappear completely within a week.


3. Blisters, burns, or disappointments. These side effects are extremely rare. They can usually be associated with an inexperienced doctor or using the wrong settings on a laser device. If you have laser hair removal while your skin is tanned, you will also increase your risk. Patients with darker skin are also at higher risk for these side effects, as lasers are used to treat their hair stronger. Store moist areas with petroleum jelly (Vaseline), and use treated ointments, especially if open areas in the skin develop.


4. Pigment changes. The skin treatment area may become darker or lighter after the laser hair removal procedure. Within a few months, it should return to your normal skin color. Loss of freckles or mole digestion may also occur, and tattoos in the treated area become lighter or darker.

To minimize the risk of laser hair removal effects, do not tan before your laser hair removal. Select an experienced doctor to perform this procedure, and make sure your doctor is fully trained in the specific laser technology for use in your situation. Any side effects you may have should be temporary, so be sure to tell your doctor if they persist or get worse over time.
